To act for George, Alan Jeffray had retained the large Brisbane firm of J. F. Fitzgerald & Power. As their advance guard, they despatched Ralph Dyball, an experienced criminal solicitor with the firm Dyball & Thompson based in Roma. Dyball, fifty-one, was a strangely apt choice for his client. At George’s age, he had been charged with misconduct in the handling of a client’s mortgage, and been struck off the solicitor’s roll; a few years later, however, he had applied successfully for readmission, and formed a partnership with F. W. B. Thompson. When Dyball arrived at St George Police Station on 10 November and met his client, etiolated and weakened from a six-week confinement in which he had been mandatorily leg-ironed, he must have felt a pang of sympathy. This response would have been strengthened by George’s convincing adamance about his innocence.
